The beauty is in the detail...
I have mainly worked with jewelry and other accessories but last year I was inspired when I ran across some beautiful agate slices at a local gem and lapidary show. The smooth, flat surface paired with the rough, natural edge was right up my alley.
In a slight variation of Kintsugi, I thought of highlighting each slice's unique outline with gold leaf.
I knew, without a doubt, I would want a set for myself, but I took a risk and matched up a few more slices in case I wanted to pursue as an extension of my Etsy offerings. The best part of being a maker is taking a risk to make something that even if unsuccessful financially, your like-minded friends and family never mind a gift!
FYI - gold-leafing is hard! My father made it look easy when I was a child and he was gold-leafing his hand-carved signs... Don't be fooled, you will end up sticky and covered in gold for days!
When all said and done, this was completely worth it! I made six sets of unique coasters that were better than I even imagined. So much so, one of my colleagues bought a set for his new home as the sealant was drying.
My next steps are to get them up on Etsy to share with the world and then start gilding the next batch I just bought this weekend!
